To achieve Relief panels Like those in the appropriate section of my site, there are several possibilities: one of the most used is called Painting with spatula, from the name of the protagonist instrument. Instead of the brush, in the spatula painting you will paint with spatulas of different sizes according to the effects you want to achieve, spreading the color on the canvas, on the wood or on the type of support chosen. The technique of the spatula allows to obtain effects and results very suggestive, more or less accentuated depending on the characteristics of the tool, the sensitivity of the artist and the “raw material”. This usually consists of tempera, but it is not the only option: oil colours and acrylics are equally valid alternatives, without excluding expressive freedoms offered by color mixes and other materials. Once again it is the artist who decides and experiment in freedom!
The Three-dimensionality of the work It is without doubt one of the most obvious consequences of spatula painting. The dotted figures take on prominence and physicality, opposing the traditional two-dimensional model of classical art. It should not be thought that painting a spatula means by force of things to produce bottoms and rough subjects. It is the artist’s job to express his vision of the world with an approximate or definite style. In the same canvas can even coexist coarse figures, with beaded edges, and perfectly delineated figures, almost painted with a thin brush. As often happens in artistic techniques, we are starting from a common point – in this case the spatula – and we get to new results every time, personal and unrepeatable.
For Make a picture with the spatula Use the flat part to spread the color and with the tip you can get details also very precise. On the market there are different varieties of spatulas to be used with decision or softness according to the signs or nuances that you want to obtain.
Surely more will be the tests and easier will get the desired result, but it is essential to know how to dose the color for a result material or more balanced for suggestive results.
Examples of beaded paintings painted with spatula
Countless are the illustrious painters of the past (and of the present) who have grappled with the painting with spatula. I myself have availed myself on several occasions of this technique, exploring themes, lights and different atmospheres. to the page Relief panels, for those interested, there are some of my paintings with spatula, the vast majority of which are abstract in nature (but not only). A small selection of spatula paintings is also visible live in my permanent exhibition in Cuneo, Via Carlo Balasubramaniam 35b, every day from 9.00 to 12.00 and the afternoon, Saturday and Sunday by appointment (3339584707).
